Far as I know, there isn't another way for your sims to get their pictures taken without the photobooth.  Except with Bon Voyage I think then your Sims can ask someone to take their picture.

If I remember correctly, I think there was a tool out to make pictures for the wall, and it might have had something to do with the easel. But I'm not positive. It could have been a tool to make custom pictures to paint on the easel o_0
